This community is based partly on the SGA model, sga_beta, but we modified it to suit the Supernatural community.

However, unlike SGA Beta, in this community both authors and betas can post looking for each other. For organizational sake, in the tags, if you are a author looking for a beta, please put: author in your tag! If you are a beta looking for an author, put: beta in your tag. This way, all the authors are listed together and all the betas are listed together when you search for things.

A lot of this FAQ is taken from theirs sga_beta and we thank them for that.

The goal of this community is to try to make the right match between a beta-reader and an author so that a story can be edited in a mutually successful manner.

1. Beta-readers who want to help out an author should make a post to the community and tag their post beta, specifying:

Category of the fics you'd beta: (Action/ Humor/ Drama/ Wincest/ Crossover/ Fluff/ Slash/ Gen/ Het/ Threesome/ Mpreg/ Deathfic/ PWP/ Smut/ BDSM/ Non-con/ RPS/ Any…)

Category of the fics you won't beta: (Action/ Humor/ Drama/ Wincest/ Crossover/ Fluff/ Slash/ Gen/ Het/ Threesome/ Mpreg/ Deathfic/ PWP/ Smut/ BDSM/ Non-con/ RPS/ none…)

Pairing of the fics you'd beta (if applicable): (Sam/Dean/ Sam/Jess / Dean/OMC / Sam/OMC / Sam/OFC / Dean/OFC / John/Bobby / John/Mary / Jared/Jensen... the possibilities are infinite)

Pairing of the fics you won't beta (if applicable): (see above)

If not pairing oriented, character fics you'd beta: (Sam, Dean, John, Jess, Bobby, YED, Cassie, Mary, Jared, Jensen, etc.)

If not pairing oriented, character fics you won't beta: (see above)

Type of beta you'd do: (grammar/ spelling/ plot…)

Length of the fics you'd beta: (Drabble/ Stand-alone/ Multi-chapter/ WIP / Novel-length…)

Example:

Lj_user Jane_Doe999 will post a comment as follows:

Category of the fics you'd beta: Action/ Humor/ PWP/ Slash
Category of the fics you won't beta: Het/ Threesome/ Mpreg
Pairing of the fics you'd beta(if applicable): Sam/Dean, Sam/Jess
Pairing of the fics you won't beta(if applicable): Dean/John, John/Sam
If not pairing oriented, character fics you'd beta: Dean
If not pairing oriented, character fics you won't beta: YED
Type of beta you'd do: grammar/ spelling
Length of the fics you'd beta: Drabble/ Stand-alone

If as an author, scrolling through this post you think this person suits your needs as an editor, then you should ask politely in the comment section if the beta-reader is available, specifying:

Title of the fic: (Once upon a time/The Sledge…)
Category of your fic: (Action/ Humor/ Drama/ Team/ Crossover/ Fluff/ Slash/ Gen/ Het/ Threesome/ Mpreg/ Deathfic/ Non-con…)
Pairing (if applicable): (Sam/Dean... the possibilities are infinite)
Secondary pairings: (John/Mary...the possibilities are infinite)
If not pairing oriented, main character or characters: (John, Sam, Dean…)
Type of beta you'd like: (grammar/ spelling/ plot…)
Length: (Drabble/ Stand-alone/ Multi-chapter/ Novel-length… also include number of words)
Short Summary: (…)

Be truthful, this is your beta, you don’t want to surprise/trick him or her into reading something she didn’t sign up for. If you’re not sure about something, or haven’t decided yet because it’s still a WIP, say so.

Example:
Lj_user Cool_Car posts a comment to Jane_Doe999’s post:

Hi, I wrote a fanfic recently and would like you to be my beta-reader.
My fic is called “Haunted House.”
It is humor and slash and features Sam and Dean in a haunted house. It is a stand-alone fic of 2500 words. It has no secondary pairings (or characters). I’d like a grammar/spelling beta please. After that the author and the potential beta should take all the conversation off LJ to see if they can work out an arrangement that suits them both.

Note that beta-readers can say no to any request. Don’t be offended, people may not have enough time because they’re swamped with projects, or your fic is just not their cup of coffee.

Also don’t post your entire fic to the community. After you have found your beta-reader agree on a way to give him or her your fic (e-mail/lj_post/msn…).

2. Authors should follow the same procedure in regards to finding a beta. They use basically the same format only they tag their post: author. My advise to an author is to have your story nearly half complete before posting here looking for a beta, unless you are looking for a beta for a WIP. In that case you would post here right from the start.

Format posting example of an author needing a beta:

Category of the fics you'd need beta'd: (Action/ Humor/ Drama/ Wincest/ Crossover/ Fluff/ Slash/ Gen/ Het/ Threesome/ Mpreg/ Deathfic/ PWP/ Smut/ BDSM/ Non-con/ RPS/ Any…)

Pairing of the fics you'd need beta'd (if applicable): (Sam/Dean/ Sam/Jess / Dean/OMC / Sam/OMC / Sam/OFC / Dean/OFC / John/Bobby / John/Mary / Jared/Jensen... the possibilities are infinite)

Type of beta needed: (grammar/ spelling/ plot / all…)

Length of the fic that needs a beta: (Drabble/ Stand-alone/ Multi-chapter/ WIP / Novel-length…)

Turn-around time need for fic: (when the author need the fic back edited)

Contact Info: (leave e-mail address or someway the beta can reach you)

Use the tags feature so finding a beta becomes easier!

Good luck!
